Kesariya, close to Motihari boasts of being home to one of the largest Buddhist Stupas in the world. It was excavated by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) in the year 1998. At a height of about 104 feet, it is taller than the Borobodur Stupa in Java, which is a popular world heritage monument. This Stupa is of great significance, especially to the Buddhists, as it is called as ‘Raja Ben Ka Deora’ and is believed to have been constructed by the Licchivis in Vaishali before Lord Buddha attained Nirvana. Records have also shown that this site was visited by the Chinese pilgrim, Hieun Tsang in the seventh century. Excavations carried out in this site have also revealed terraces with ‘Pradakshina path’, statues of Lord Buddha in Bhoomi Sparsha pose, earthen pots and lamps, bricks etc. Do visit this Stupa to experience the divine aura surrounding this Buddhist site. Gandhi Memorial in Motihari

Tourist Attractions in MotihariThe foundation for this structure was laid in the year 1972, by the then governor, Mr. D.K.Barooch. Mr. Vidyakar Kavi, an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles, dedicated this to the nation. There is a 48 feet high stone pillar at the place where Gandhiji was presented before the Motihari court regarding violation of the orders issued. This memorial thus commemorates the beginning of India’s independence movement against the oppressive British rule. The Champaran Satyagraha played a crucial role in the freedom struggle as it was here in Motihari that Mahatma Gandhi first brought into light the cruel atrocities committed by the British against the poor peasants .
