Ashokan Pillar: The Ashokan Pillar at Lauriya, Areraj is believed to have been erected by the MauryanEmperor, King Ashoka. It is also called the Stambh Dharma Lekh and this well preserved structure has six letters engraved on it. It is currently devoid of any capital. This beautiful structure is a single block of polished sand stone, with a height of about 36 and half feet above the ground. It has a diameter of 41.8 inches at the base, and tapers towards the top, the diameter at the top being 37.6 inches. The weight of the structure above the ground is about 34 tons, while a portion of it might be sunk into the ground. According to the reports, this pillar had an animal statue on its crown, that was later transferred to the museum at Kolkata.
